A Brief History of Western Music

From Monteverdi to Messiaen — five centuries of musical evolution.

Renaissance & Baroque

1500–1750

The birth of opera, the rise of instrumental music, and the perfection of counterpoint. Composers served the church and court, creating music of mathematical precision and spiritual depth.

Classical

1750–1820

Clarity, balance, and form. The symphony, string quartet, and piano sonata emerged as the defining genres. Music moved from aristocratic courts to public concert halls.

Romantic

1800–1910

Individual expression, emotional intensity, and national identity. Orchestras grew larger, harmony grew richer, and composers became public figures.

Impressionist

1880–1920

Colour over structure. Debussy and Ravel dissolved traditional harmony into shimmering textures, drawing inspiration from visual art and poetry.

Modern

1900–present

Radical experimentation. Stravinsky shattered rhythm, Schoenberg abandoned tonality, and Bartók merged folk music with avant-garde technique.
